The Horry County Adult Education program – currently housed in the Myrtle Beach Family Learning Center – is moving to a new location beginning Feb. 16.

The program will temporarily move to the Grand Strand campus of Horry Georgetown Technical College, located near the Market Common in Myrtle Beach, according to Horry County Schools spokeswoman Teal Harding.

“This temporary relocation is necessary to allow for the demolition of the Family Learning Center and the construction of a new Myrtle Beach Middle School,” Harding said.

Classes will be held in Building 100 and will keep the regular operational hours of Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Horry County Schools will be providing limited transportation for students during the temporary move, Harding said. The bus will pick up students at the Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium (at the Family Learning Center) at 8:45 a.m. for transport to the HGTC campus, and depart the HGTC campus at 12:45 p.m.

No stops will be made between departure and arrival, Harding said.

Registration for new students will begin on Feb. 16 at the HGTC location at 8 a.m. and again at 5 p.m. The following week, ongoing registration will be held each Monday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In December, the Horry County Board of Education voted to only accommodate the district-sponsored Adult Education program, leaving several other programs to fend for themselves.

The Boys and Girls Club, Waccamaw EOC Head Start, Horry County Literacy Council and Baby Net – part of the First Steps program that helps developmentally-delayed infants – along with other programs will not be relocated by the district.
