A Myrtle Beach area boys basketball coach has been removed from the position after an alleged altercation with a student.

Chris Tibbits, who remains a social studies teacher at St. James High School, was accused of poking a student in the chest and spitting on him on Feb. 20, according to an incident report

After an investigation by Horry County Police Department that included video footage and interviews, an officer determined the confrontation was verbal and not physical, the report states.

It doesn’t specify if the student is a player on the basketball team.

Horry County Schools spokeswoman Lisa Bourcier confirmed the removal Monday but declined to comment on the matter further.

Since it wasn’t a physical altercation, the school will conduct an internal investigation, according to the report.

It doesn’t appear that Tibbits is facing any charges related to the incident.
