Coastal Carolina University ends mask mandate as omicron wave subsides in Horry County
Students, staff and faculty will no longer be required to cover their faces at Coastal Carolina University following a Thursday vote from the school’s board of trustees.
The board had initially voted to end the mandate at the end of last semester in December, but reinstated the requirement in January as the emergence of the omicron variant spurred a barrage of new cases on campus and across Horry County.
Without the mandate in place, masks won’t be required in most places on campus, with a few exceptions.
Student Health Services, Counseling Services and on-campus COVID-19 testing and vaccine sites still require masks, as well as shuttles and minibuses at CCU.
Anyone who has tested positive for the virus is still required to wear a mask during their “precautionary period.”
CCU has reported more than 1,000 cases among its students and staff this academic year, according to its COVID-19 dashboard.
