Plenty of kids know what career they want “when they grow up,” but fifth-graders at Ocean Drive Elementary have the research to back it up.

Fifth grade students at the North Myrtle Beach school spent Monday morning in business mode after creating a presentation, website and posters about a selected career. The students were asked to research their careers and create a tri-fold poster, said Jill Chandler, guidance counselor.

The fifth graders presented their careers to younger students at the school.

Some students dressed in appropriate uniforms and had props for demonstration, Chandler said. Students created brochures and business cards, and some provided samples of food or goods.

The career projects met the “career awareness” standard taught in elementary schools as part of the S.C. Comprehensive Developmental Guidance and Counseling Program Model, Chandler said.

“Pathways to Success, a career planning guide for state educators, outlines goals for all students in order to prepare them for a career as well as plans for success in each grade,” Chandler said.
