Georgetown schools celebrating reading with parade, speakers
Georgetown County students will kick off their weekend with a book in each hand.
The Georgetown County School District is hosting their Read-In event Friday in collaboration with the annual state reading celebration, which honors libraries and encourages students to put down the remote and pick up a book.
The state’s Read-In was last Tuesday, but Rebecca Adams, media specialist at McDonald Elementary School, said Georgetown’s celebration was pushed back because of rain. That hasn’t dampened the excitement, however.
“We appreciate everyone's support, donations and time volunteered to make our inaugural event a success,” Adams said.
The celebration kicks off with a parade down Front Street, starting at the Kaminski House at 10 a.m. and ending at East Bay Park.
Students from every school in the district and Coastal Montessori will then hear from state and local officials, such as the superintendent, mayor, Georgetown County Board of Education chairman and librarians. Rose Rock, mother of Chris Rock and author Mama Rock’s Rules, also will speak during the event, Adams said.
Following the speakers, everyone will have 30 minutes of “reading on the lawn” before lunch is served, Adams said.
