Beware of scam artists at your front door, Santee Cooper warns
Santee Cooper is warning all customers in the Horry County area to be aware of scammers who may show up at your front door.
South Carolina’s leading power company says perpetrators of the scam “are calling businesses claiming to be Santee Cooper employees and demanding immediate payment of bills.”
“Customers have been asked for credit card payments or wire transfers,” according to a release from Santee Cooper Tuesday. “The caller will even leave a callback number that, if dialed, is answered by someone who claims to be with Santee Cooper.”
The scam artists have also been impersonating Santee Cooper employees, showing up at homes and businesses in clothing that resembles a Santee Cooper uniform, according to the company.
Santee Cooper is reminding all customers, both residential and commercial, that the company’s employees will never come to your home or business demanding any form of payment.
The company “will never force you to pay with a particular form of card or other payment,” according to the release.
To verify that anyone representing themselves as an employee actually is a Santee Cooper employee, customers can call 1-800-804-7424.
