Victim nearly shot during armed robbery at Ocean Boulevard hotel

A gunshot just missed a woman who was wrestling with an armed robbery suspect over her cellphone at an Ocean Boulevard hotel.

Myrtle Beach police were called about 9:30 a.m. Friday to the Monterey Bay Suites at 6404 N. Ocean Blvd. for an attempted murder and armed robbery, according to a police report.

A 19-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man were asleep in a bed next to the hotel room door when they were awoken by a man standing in the doorway with a handgun, yelling “give me your money,” the report states.

The 19-year-old then grabbed at her cellphone, and the suspect yelled at her to put it down. The two tussled over it until the suspect fired a gunshot that nearly hit the 19 year old, police said.

After the suspect shot at the 19 year old, the 31-year-old victim told the male suspect he would give him his money and handed over about $1,750, authorities said.

A witness, who was in the bathroom during the incident, came out after hearing the shot fired and saw a man in a black hoodie and dark jeans holding a gun, police said.

The 31-year-old victim told police the group came to Myrtle Beach from Georgia with two other women. The victim told police the two women were now gone, along with all their stuff, and the 31-year-old victim told police he believed the women left the hotel room door unsecured so the suspect could come in and rob them, according to the report.

Hotel staff gave police video surveillance of a possible suspect vehicle leaving the area.
