Man arrested after nearly eight-hour standoff with Horry County police

A man was arrested after a nearly eight-hour standoff with Horry County police in the Surfside Beach area that began Tuesday night and went into Wednesday morning.

Officers were called about 8:20 p.m. Tuesday to a home on Orion Drive in the Crystal Lake Community in the Surfside Beach area for a domestic violence complaint, according to Lt. Raul Denis with Horry County police.

A woman reported that her estranged husband assaulted her with a knife when she returned there to pick up some belongings, police said.

Her injuries were minor, and she told police the man locked himself inside the home, may have guns, and made threats to shoot police, Denis said.

The man refused to cooperate with authorities, and the situation turned into a nearly eight-hour standoff until about 4 a.m. Wednesday when Horry County Police Department Special Operations personnel forced their way inside and took the man into custody, Denis said.

No one was injured during the incident, authorities said.

The man arrested will be identified once formal charges are filed Wednesday, police said.
