A 39-year-old man tried to break away from a man who was assaulting him and demanding his money, but couldn’t, police said.
Myrtle Beach officers were called about 5 a.m. Tuesday morning to the area by the Econo Lodge on Ocean Boulevard, and the victim told them he was robbed and assaulted near the 500 block of South Kings Highway.
The victim told police he was standing in front of a restaurant at Sixth Avenue South and Ocean Boulevard when he asked the two suspects for a lighter. They gave him one and then crossed the street, and the victim began walking west toward Kings Highway, police said.
The victim stopped by the “grease dumpster” outside Pop’s Place on the 500 block of Kings Highway, he said he saw the suspects rapidly running toward him and calling out to him, authorities said.
One of the men yelled for the victim to get on the ground and he said he did. He said one of the suspect’s started punching him in the head and yelling “give me your money,” according to the report.
The victim said he tried to break away, but couldn’t. The suspect continued hitting him and took $10 from him and then ran toward the Econo Lodge, according to the victim.
The victim told police he saw the suspects looking out a third story window from the hotel. Police scoured the hotel looking for the men, but couldn’t find them, the report states.
EMS arrived on scene and treated the victim, who had scratches on his right arm and swelling behind his ear, police said.
Police obtained footage of possible suspects from cameras at Sixth Avenue South and Ocean Boulevard.
