Conway man arrested after short standoff with police
A Conway man is behind bars after engaging in a brief standoff with Horry County police Tuesday in the Conway area.
James Euris Doster Jr., 52, is charged with pointing and presenting firearms at a person, threatening the life, person, or family of a public official, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct, J. Reuben Long Detention Center records show.
Horry County police were called about 8 p.m. Tuesday to a location on the 5000 block of S.C. 701 South in the Conway area about a man who was threatening suicide.
When police arrived, they spoke with witnesses there who told them Doster had sent text messages and made comments leading her to believe he was going to commit suicide.
The suspect called another witness on scene and threatened to kill any police who came near his residence. An officer spoke with Doster on the phone, and he said he would come outside with a rifle and start killing all law enforcement if the officer came into his yard and also stated police were going to have to kill him then hung up the phone, according to a police report.
When the officer looked toward Doster’s residence he saw a man emerge with a rifle, and the officer pulled out his gun and ordered the man to drop his gun and put his hands up, authorities said.
Doster then put the gun down against a chain-linked fence and went back inside his home.
Police moved in closer toward the residence and tried to get Doster to come back outside. Once Doster was outside, an officer tackled him to the ground after determining he wasn’t armed, the report states.
The officer repeatedly told Doster to give him his hands, but he resisted and locked his hands together in front of his chest. Police pulled his hands apart and arrested him. Doster was highly intoxicated and continued to be loud and belligerent and would not stop using profanity after being repeatedly asked not to, police said.
Doster denied all accusations of suicidal intentions when police asked him if he was having thoughts of hurting himself, but did complain of shoulder pain. He was taken to Conway Medical Center where he was examined and released to police after a doctor cleared him for incarceration.
He is being held on $2,757.50 bond at J. Reuben Long Detention Center, jail records show.
