A Georgetown County correctional officer and his wife were arrested Tuesday for mistreating animals.

Jason William Teeter, 39, and Shannon Michelle Teeter, 40, are charged with ill treatment of animals first offense, according to Carrie Weaver, public information officer for Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office.

Georgetown County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Green Acres Drive in the Beneventum Community of Georgetown County for a welfare check of animals on Tuesday, Weaver said. While on scene officers saw dogs inside and outside of the residence which appeared to be malnourished.

Dogs inside the residence were kept in confined kennels in unsanitary conditions, Weaver said. Seven animals were seized and transported to the St. Francis Animal Center for care and evaluation.

Teeter was working as a county correctional officer at the Georgetown County Detention Center, but his employment has been terminated, Weaver said.

The Teeters were released on a surety bond, Weaver said.
