Suspect tries to rob store with gun and knife in Myrtle Beach

A young man with a gun tried to rob a Myrtle Beach convenience store early Friday.

The suspect pulled the trigger, and the gun clicked but didn’t fire, according to a Myrtle Beach Police report. The suspect, who the clerk described to be a male who looked about 14-years-old, smiled when the gun didn’t fire and then pulled out a kitchen knife, which was about 9 inches long, according to the police report.

Police are not releasing the suspect’s name because he is a juvenile, according to Lt. Joey Crosby. The suspect was taken into custody Friday morning, Crosby said.

The Scotchman clerk told the suspect to leave and that he won’t get any money more than $20, so the suspect fled the gas station on 6201 N. Kings Highway and took off down 62nd Avenue North, police said.

Officers were called about the incident around 1 a.m. Friday. Prior to the robbery attempt, the clerk was organizing tobacco products behind the front counter when the suspect came in and went to the back of the store, the clerk told police.

The suspect then approached the counter and the clerk saw the suspect was holding a gun about waist high. The suspect then raised the gun, and the clerk told him, “Don’t be stupid,” according to the report.

The clerk said that’s when the suspect tried to fire the gun and then pulled out the knife when the gun didn’t work, authorities said.

The clerk told police he recognized the suspect as someone who has come into the store before, but didn’t know his name. He said the suspect took off on a long board skateboard, police said.

No money was taken during the incident.
