Update: Murrells Inlet man arrested after Thursday robbery at BB&T Bank

After a Thursday morning robbery of BB&T Bank in Murrells Inlet, the Georgetown County Sherriff’s department has arrested one Murrells Inlet man.

Damon Antwon Brown, 31, was arrested just after 5:30 Thursday afternoon and transported to Georgetown County Detention Center, where he will be formally charged with armed robbery and await a bond hearing, according to a news release.

Police responded to the BB&T Bank at 656 Sunnyside Ave. at 11:35 a.m., according to Lt. Neil Johnson, with the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office.

Johnson said a man wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, dark pants and sunglasses entered the bank, approached the counter and demanded money.

Police determined the incident to be a strong armed robbery as no weapon was presented. The man left the bank with an undetermined amount of cash and ran down Murrells Inlet Road before getting into a gray, four-door Sedan that was waiting for him, Johnson said.

Johnson also said the police canine unit was called in and tracked the suspect from the bank to the getaway car, parked nearby on Murrells Inlet Road.

No one was harmed in the incident, police said.

“No one was injured, which is what we worry about the most when we have a situation like this,” Johnson said. “Money can be replaced — lives can’t.”

“I’m glad nobody was hurt,” Murrells Inlet Road resident, Bill Gandy said.

He has lived in Murrells Inlet area more than 10 years and was shocked by the incident because the area is typically quiet, he said.

“It’s wild. I hope they get him,” he said before news broke of Brown’s arrest.

Gandy said he wasn’t worried about the crime happening nearby because there is a strong neighborhood watch in the area.
