Unlocked cars targeted in recent rash of Horry County break-ins
A rash of car break-ins in residential neighborhoods has prompted Horry County police to remind residents to lock up their vehicles.
The break-ins are happening in parts of Conway, Socastee, Garden City Beach and other south-end areas of the county, according to Lt. Raul Denis, spokesman with Horry County police.
About 80 incidents have been reported this month, and many more were reported around the holiday season when burglaries typically spike. Thieves walk around neighborhoods at night and riffle through unlocked cars, Denis said.
“What’s troubling is that the 80 cases we’ve worked this month could have been prevented if people locked their cars,” Denis said.
He recommended residents lock their doors and not leave valuables inside their cars.
“In some cases people leave wallets, checkbooks, jewelry, guns - you name it - in the cars and don’t lock them,” Denis said.

Residents also should leave outside lights on if possible and make sure motion lights are operating properly, he said. Being watchful is key, and residents should call police if they see a suspicious person or vehicle in their area, especially late at night, Denis said.
“We have limited resources, so we can’t be everywhere all the time. That’s why it’s important for people to call in if they see something remotely suspicious,” Denis said.
Horry County police have stepped up patrols in these areas, he said.
