A 34-year-old Georgetown man was charged with involuntary manslaughter after a 54-year-old man suffered a grave injury following a family argument, authorities said.

Jermaine Anttwaine Reid was arrested without incident after he surrendered Tuesday at the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office, police said.

Officers were called about 11 p.m. Sunday after a “suspicious death” happened at Georgetown Memorial Hospital, according to Carrie Cuthbertson Weaver, sheriff’s office spokeswoman.

Police were initially called by Sam Grant, 54, about 8:30 p.m. Sunday and responded to a home on Rustwood Drive in the Santee Community in Georgetown County. Grant told authorities his nephew assaulted him, but another family member said there had been an argument but no assault, according to a police report.

Grant saw his nephew and Reid at a location on the 100 block of Thomas Drive later that night, and Grant’s nephew told Reid about the earlier family incident on Rustwood Drive. Reid was told Grant disrespected a mutual family member during that incident. Reid slapped Grant in the face twice, and Grant fell and hit his head on a plastic cooler after the second time, police said.

Grant was unresponsive after that and EMS was called when he wouldn’t wake. He was taken to Georgetown Memorial Hospital where he later died, authorities said.

Reid was taken to the Georgetown County Detention Center where he was booked for involuntary manslaughter, jail records show.
