Conway man charged in ‘ambush-style’ murder at Broadway at the Beach denied bond
A 32-year-old man charged with murder after an “unprovoked, ambush-style” attack at Broadway at the Beach in October was denied bond.
Philip David Guderyon is charged with the murder of Justin Hodges, 25, of the Loris area, who died after suffering injuries during an incident Oct. 17, authorities said.
Hodges died at Grand Strand Medical Center at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 28, according to Darris Fowler, deputy coroner with Horry County.
Circuit Court Judge Benjamin Culbertson denied Guderyon’s bond Wednesday based on Guderyon’s previous record and lack of a stable housing situation. Guderyon, of Conway, was living with friends in Conway, according to Tom Floyd, Guderyon’s lawyer.
“He is of limited means, so we ask that you consider GPS monitoring and bond,” Floyd said to the judge. “He did cooperate with police.”
Martin Spratlin, assistant solicitor, told the judge Guderyon has several criminal charges from other states, including a kidnapping charge in Massachusetts.
“The danger to the community is clear from his previous charges,” Spratlin said.
Officers were called about 12:34 a.m. Oct. 17 to Carlos ’n’ Charlie’s at Broadway at the Beach to assist with a medical issue, police said in the arrest warrant.
Hodges was taken to the hospital where it was later discovered he suffered a “major head injury,” and he never regained consciousness and died more than a week later, the arrest warrant stated.
Myrtle Beach police interviewed witnesses, reviewed video footage and determined Hodges was the victim of an “unprovoked, ambush-style attack,” the warrant said.
Police allege Guderyon “maliciously attacked Hodges without just cause or excuse.”
Guderyon was originally arrested by Myrtle Beach police Oct. 19 in connection with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. He is being held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center without bond.
