Horry County police officers are investigating an armed robbery at a Conway area convenience store, and one person has been charged with robbing a second store Sunday evening.

The first incident happened at the Scotchman Convenience Store, 2354 U.S. 501, about 3 a.m. Sunday.

The clerk, a 29-year-old man, told police that he was robbed at gunpoint behind the store as he was taking out the trash, according to the police report.

The victim described the man as a black male, wearing black pants, a leopard shirt, and a black hooded sweatshirt.

The second incident happened at the Kangaroo Express Convenience Store, 1390 East Hwy 905, about 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police charged Marlin Bateman, 17, of Forest Park, Georgia with armed robbery and possession of a weapon during a violent crime Monday, according to Lt. Raul Denis with Horry County police.

Horry County detectives identified Bateman from witness testimonies, Denis said. The suspect also left his cell phone in the store after the robbery, according to arrest warrants.

According to the police report, the clerk, a 20-year-old woman, told police that the suspect entered the store and acted suspiciously.

As she rang up his purchases, he allegedly pointed a gun at her and yelled for the money.

The victim told police that the suspect became inpatient with her while she was opening the register and threatened to shoot her. She then went on to tell officers that he attempted to shoot her, but the gun malfunctioned, according to the report.
