Suspects charged in shoplifting incident that sparked chase, shooting

Horry County police have released the name of the suspect accused of dragging an officer as she fled the scene of a store she allegedly stole from Tuesday, leading police on a 10-mile chase.

Police responded to a call of shoplifting at the Wal-Mart on Beaver Run Boulevard off S.C. 544 at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. But officers say when they tried to question the suspect identified as 25-year-old Laquandra D. Borden of Sumter, she fled the scene, with one of the officers trapped on the top of her moving vehicle.

Borden was reportedly shot in the arm by another Horry County officer who feared for the safety of the trapped policeman, said Lt. Raul Denis, spokesman for Horry County police.

Police say Borden ignored all pleas to stop, but temporarily slowed enough for the officer to free himself, with the officer sustaining only minor injuries.

Borden’s chase finally ended in front of St. Andrew Catholic Church.

Two officers injured in the incident were treated and released from a local hospital. Borden was listed in stable condition Tuesday and was being kept overnight at a hospital for observation.

She was charged Wednesday with hit and run, leaving the scene of an accident. She is being held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center and police say more charges are pending.

“She is expected to be charged with assault, shoplifting and other driving related charges,” Denis said.

Police say a second suspect in the shoplifting incident, 36-year-old Chasity S. Stokes of Sumter, was charged Tuesday with shoplifting. Denis says more charges are pending. Stokes is also being held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
