A Georgetown County Detention Center officer was arrested Friday in connection with fraudulently obtaining funds from the jail’s “inmates account,” police said.

James E. Drye, III, 35, is charged with public official, misconduct in office and breach of trust, according to jail records.

The arrest came at the conclusion of an investigation that began Nov. 2 conducted by Georgetown County Sheriff’s investigators, according to a press release from Lt. Neil Johnson with the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation was prompted after GCDC administration discovered funds were missing, and documentation was obtained from the bank which supported the suspicion that the funds were fraudulently obtained, Johnson said.

The investigation allegedly showed that in September 2014, Drye had fraudulently obtained funds by cashing a check, which he made out to himself in the amount of $550.00, police said.

Drye, who has been serving as an correctional officer with the Georgetown County Detention Center since Aug.18, 2003, was released on $4,210 bail on Friday, jail records show.
