Two men charged with murder in shooting of CCU student
Conway police arrested two men Friday in connection with the shooting death of a Coastal Carolina University student.
Jordan Principe, 17, and Alfred Dunkin, 20, both of Conway, are charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to police records.
Craig Gerard Gray Jr., a computer science major at Coastal, was shot at the University Suites apartment complex Wednesday night.
Police were called to the complex on Technology Boulevard just after 7 p.m. Wednesday. There they found Gray. Horry County Deputy Coroner Tony Hendrick said the 21-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have provided few details about what led to the shooting, including how the suspects knew the victim.
Neither Principe nor Dunkin attend Coastal, said university spokesman Doug Bell.
Both suspects have been arrested before, according to Horry County court records. In August, Principe was charged with drug possession. The following month, he was charged with third-degree assault and battery.
Dunkin has convictions for drug possession and fraud this year, according to court records.
Principe and Dunkin are being held at J. Reuben Detention Center.
Some students have discussed holding a remembrance service for Gray, but nothing has been scheduled yet, said Debbie Conner, vice president for campus life and student engagement. She said vigils and other tributes are typically initiated by students, who work with university counselors on arrangements.
“It really comes from their friends,” Conner said. “It’s something they want and the student would have wanted.”
