Myrtle Beach woman charged with forgery after fraudulent check cashed
A Myrtle Beach woman was arrested in connection with forgery after police said she cashed a counterfeit check.
Samantha Wiggins, 24, is charged with forgery less than $10,000, J. Reuben Long Detention Center jail records show.
On Sept. 16, Wiggins cashed a fraudulent check at the Aquarius Motel in downtown Myrtle Beach, according to a Myrtle Beach police report.
A 24-year-old woman who works at the motel told police Wiggins, a tenant at there, came into the office and asked them to cash a check so she could pay her rent.
The check was made out to the suspect and was for $1,790, and the motel clerk cashed it, giving the suspect $1,590 and withholding some for future rent, police said.
An investigation later showed the check was counterfeit and that the check issuer was a law firm in Florida whose account had been compromised, according to the report.
Law firm employees told Myrtle Beach police that they had been made aware of fraudulent checks being sent out all across the country.
Police obtained an arrest warrant and Wiggins was taken into custody on Monday; however, the details of her arrest were not available.
She is currently being held at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on $5,000 bond, jail records show.
