Georgetown officials warn the public of possible evacuation scam

Georgetown officials are warning the public about a possible scam involving people posing as S.C. National Guardsmen asking residents to evacuate their homes.

Jackie Broach, Georgetown County spokeswoman, said county officials have received reports that people posing as S.C. National Guardsman are going door-to-door in some parts of Georgetown County and asking residents to voluntarily evacuate.

Broach said in a news release that S.C. National Guard representatives stationed at the Georgetown Emergency Operations Center said this is not authorized by the National Guard at any location in Georgetown County and warn it could be a scam.

“In disasters in other areas there have been cases of people posing as authorities asking people to leave their homes, then they go in and pillage things from the home after it is empty. If someone representing themselves as a guardsman or other authority asks you to leave your home, please call the Georgetown County Emergency Operations Center, 843-545-3273, to confirm whether what they claim is legitimate,” Broach said in the release issued Tuesday afternoon.
