Fat Boiz bar, site of two June shootings, voluntarily closes

The Myrtle Beach-area Fat Boiz bar voluntarily shut down after two shootings occurred there within one month over the summer.

Horry County Solicitor Jimmy Richardson said his office had begun the process of asking the court to close the bar, located on Fred Nash Boulevard, as a public nuisance in June.

“When we do that, we send a letter of abatement to the [business] asking them to stop the actions that are causing the nuisance,” Richardson said. “I’m most cases, they choose to close voluntarily.”

Richardson said the bar has been closed since early July.

On June 4, Horry County police were called to the bar at about 4:40 a.m. for a shooting.

In that shooting, a 24-year-old man and a 33-year-old man were taken to Grand Strand Medical Center in a private car for treatment of gunshot wounds to their stomachs, authorities said.

Security guards at the bar told officers that one of the victims was involved in a fight on the side of the building when the shooting happened, according to the report. Someone fired more gunshots from another area of the parking lot during that incident.

Security guards said they couldn’t identify the shooters because the patrons crowded out to get away, according to a police report.

Then on June 28, police responded to Fat Boiz – also around 4:40 a.m. – for a shooting involving three men and security guards.

Highway Patrol officers were conducting a vehicle accident investigation in the area and heard several gunshots near the bar, so they called Horry County police.

The three suspects were escorted out by security guards over a pool game incident when a security officer saw a man in a car pull a gun. The security guard responded by drawing his own firearm and was shot at by other people, police said.

The security guard was shot in the hand and taken to Grand Strand Medical Center, according to the report.

The investigation revealed two groups of people were firing guns at each other when one of the groups fired toward the security officers. Two people suffered minor gunshot wounds, police said.

Three men were charged with attempted murder and weapons possession in connection with the incident, police said.
