HCPD: No merit to ‘Black Panther’ school violence threats
An investigation revealed “Black Panther” threats circulating on social media about attacks planned against Horry County schools are without merit, but said police will be keeping a watchful eye, according to Lt. Raul Denis, spokesman with Horry County police.
Rumors about attacks planned against students and teachers found their way into various social media outlets and caused concern, authorities said.
Denis said an investigation was launched a few days ago after law enforcement intelligence agents uncovered the rumors.
“The source(s) of these rumors were quickly and diligently investigated and the threat was found to have no merit,” Denis said in a release.
Denis said the Horry County Police Department stands by the investigation conducted by the intelligence agents, and also said officers are playing it safe by maintaining an elevated focus on any and all schools in their patrol areas.
Denis said they will continue to monitor all law enforcement intelligence sources for any updated information as well.
“Our primary goal is everyone’s safety, and we will continue to work towards it,” Denis said. “… we urge everyone to exercise caution and alertness every day. Noticing and reporting suspicious activity is everyone’s job in these troubled times.”
Denis said anyone with knowledge of a suspicious person or event should contact local authorities immediately.
