Surfside Beach police charged a man Thursday in a fatal hit-and-run that happened in June.

Dylan Pete Walker-Shook, 25, of Claremont, N.C., is charged with leaving the scene of a collision involving death, according to Surfside Beach police chief Rodney Keziah.

He is being held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center on a $150,000 bond, according to jail records.

A mo-ped driver, Billie Ann Waylon, 63, from the Myrtle Beach area, died in the crash, according to Michelle McSpadden with the Horry County Coronor’s Office.

“We are pleased to finally bring closure of this case for the family of the victim involved,” Keziah said.

Officers responded to the fatal crash about 10:40 p.m. June 11 after it occurred at U.S. 17 Business and 13th Avenue North in Surfside Beach.

The crash involved a mo-ped and black sports utility vehicle, and after the incident the SUV left the scene. Witnesses described the SUV as possibly a black Dodge Journey with an out-of-state license plate, police said. Officials recovered the SUV in Florida, Lt. Kenneth Hofmann with Surfside Beach Police said.

Multiple agencies investigated the fatal crash for several months, Keziah said. The agencies included Surfside Beach police, 15th Judicial Circuit Solicitors Office, S.C. Highway Patrol M.A.I.T., S.C. State Law Enforcement Division, Florida Highway Patrol, Florida State Attorney’s Office, North Carolina Highway Patrol, Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, Myrtle Beach police and the Horry County Coroner’s Office.

“This case resulted in many hours of investigation and out-of-state travel to successfully arrest the offender,” Keziah said. “I commend all officers and agencies involved in this investigation for their dedication and professionalism.”
