Teen arrested for 2024 fatal Conway shooting to be tried for murder as an adult
An 18-year-old Longs woman, who was arrested when she was 16 for allegedly shooting and killing a 19-year-old Mullins man, will now be tried as an adult for murder in the case.
Nashyiah Quinasia Vereen was booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center Friday, charged with murder. Since the initial shooting took place when Vereen was a minor, police did not reveal her name and she was charged as a juvenile.
The court made the decision in April that Vereen would be tried as an adult after a two-day hearing, according to the 15th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
The murder charge stems from a shooting that happened on Nov. 7, 2024, when officers with the Horry County Police Department responded to 478 Fowler Road in Conway. When police arrived, they found a man, Daquan Wright, laying on a porch unconscious, according to a police report.
Wright did not appear to be breathing, and he had a weak pulse, according to the report. Officers observed blood coming from Wright’s face from “what appeared to be a gunshot wound.” Wright was then transported to Grand Strand Medical Center.
According to an arrest warrant, a doorbell camera showed Vereen shooting Wright. A spokesperson with HCPD could not provide any more details about how or if Vereen knew Wright. Officers arrested Vereen at the scene.
A week after Vereen’s initial arrest, the 15th Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office filed a motion, asking for Family Court to relinquish jurisdiction over the murder charge to the Court of General Sessions where Vereen could then be tried as an adult.
“This is a long process where the court assesses many factors in order to ultimately make the decision as to which court is most appropriate to handle the charge,” the Solicitor’s Office wrote in an email to The Sun News.
Vereen was held at a juvenile detention center in South Carolina. At some point after she turned 18, she attempted to escape the center, according to an HCPD spokesperson.
Vereen remains at J. Reuben Long Detention Center where she is being held without bail.
