Over a dozen arrested in North Myrtle Beach. Two appear to be student athletes
At least a dozen young adults were arrested in North Myrtle Beach Sunday on charges related to possessing drugs and having open containers of alcohol.
Two of the people charged, Colin Torrence Mikulecky and Aidan Matthew Steinfeldt, appear to be student athletes at Duke University and the University of Richmond, respectively.
Mikulecky, who is 19 and appears on the roster of the swimming and diving team at Duke, was charged with public possession of open containers and use of an altered license or identification card. Steinfeldt, 20, who is listed as a tight end for University of Richmond’s football team, was charged with public possession of open containers and possession of cocaine.
The University of Richmond Athletics Department declined to comment Monday. Duke University hasn’t responded to The Sun News’ request for comment.
North Myrtle Beach Police Department Spokesperson Desirae Gostlin told The Sun News that it’s unclear if the arrests were made in connection to a party. North Myrtle Beach passed a new ordinance earlier this year targeting nuisance parties, giving police officers the authority to disperse them.
Are the charges connected?
Seventeen people between the ages of 19 and 23 were arrested by North Myrtle Beach Police between 11:36 p.m. and 2:42 a.m. It’s unclear if any of the charges are related.
At least 10 of the people arrested, including Mikulecky and Steinfeldt, appear to be students at Duke University or the University of Richmond based on their social media accounts. The Sun News could not confirm if the other seven arrested were also college students.
In the past, students from Duke University have come to the Myrtle Beach area for what is called “Beach Break” to celebrate the end of the spring semester. Visit Myrtle Beach also conducted a “Beach Break” giveaway for a Duke University student.
Sixteen of the young adults arrested were charged with public possession of open containers, four were also charged with unlawful use of a license and two were charged with possession of cocaine.
Out of the 17 arrested, eight of them are under the age of 21.
