A Horry County jury on Thursday convicted a North Carolina man for shooting and killing a woman at a Myrtle Beach resort in 2022.

A judge sentenced Lashawn Jarrett, 41, of Monroe, to life in prison after he was found guilty of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to a release from the Horry County Solicitor’s Office.

Jarrett shot and killed Rhonda Harris of Lancaster on March 1, 2022, while they were in the parking lot of the Yachtsman Resort on Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach, according to police.

Police had reported that they found Jarrett and Harris in a vehicle suffering from gun shot wounds to their heads. After collecting multiple shell casings, they all came back to a gun owned by Jarrett, the release said.

A police investigation determined that Jarrett placed the barrel of his gun against Harris’ head and pulled the trigger, then turned the weapon on himself, the release said. Harris survived for 17 days before succumbing to her injuries; Jarrett was treated and released from the hospital.

What a lawsuit says

While police said they found Jarrett and Harris in a vehicle, a lawsuit filed against Jarrett and the resort said that Harris was shot while unloading her items at the hotel.

The 38-year-old was shot by Jarrett after he was involved in a violent altercation with a person inside the vehicle, according to the suit. Jarrett fired several times, shooting the victim inside the vehicle and Harris who was parked nearby.

Members of Harris’ family delivered a powerful impact statement to the court, the release said.

Jarrett will not be eligible for parole or any type of supervised release, the release said.
