Man found dead in burning vehicle. It was purposely set on fire, Horry police say
A man was found dead in the back of a burning vehicle in Longs, according to the Horry County Coroner’s office.
Stoney Floyd Jr., 20, of Loris, was discovered about 8 p.m. Saturday in the backseat of a vehicle which was on fire on Bullock Trail in Longs, according to an email sent Monday by Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard.
At around 8:29 p.m., an officer responded to assist Horry County Fire Rescue with a vehicle fire in the area of West Bear Grass Road and Bullock Trail in Longs, according to the incident report.
The vehicle was purposely set on fire, and the victim’s body was severely burned inside, the incident report states.
The person who called in the fire said he did not get close to the car due to it being “engulfed” in flames and “setting off small explosions,” according to the incident report. He stated that he and is family heard a loud bang outside that he described as a possible transformer explosion, so he drove down toward the electrical distribution plant toward Highway 905 on West Bear Grass Road, the incident report continues.
It was there that he saw the glow of the flames and reported the fire, according to the report.
The victim’s cause of death will be determined through an autopsy, Willard wrote, but the case is being investigated as a homicide by the Horry County Police Department.
No further information has been made available. The Sun News has requested the incident report and any related arrest warrants.
