Child left alone in Myrtle Beach area home without power, food, police say
A child left alone in a Myrtle Beach area home without food or electricity has led to the arrest of two people.
Sharlyn Detrenelous Mitchell, 48, and Thomas Cornelius Mitchell, 51, were both charged by Horry County Police with unlawful conduct toward a child.
Officers responded to a home on Aug. 30, 2025, on Brookville Drive to reports of a child being left alone, according to an incident report. After inspecting the house, officers discovered that the home was without power. The child told officers that the electricity was turned off after the person they were living with had been evicted from the home, the report said.
There was no food in the fridge, and it appeared that all three slept on the floor as there was no furniture, including a bed, in the home, the report said. There were clothes on the floor and trash, the report said.
The child was turned over to Emergency Protective Services.
Both adults remain in J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
