Five Myrtle Beach smoke shops are suspected of selling illegal substances linked to overdoses and suicides, disguised as candy and other foods.

The Myrtle Beach Police Department announced Thursday in a Facebook post that it would be serving search warrants on five local vape and smoke shops potentially selling the substances. It was not revealed which shops are being searched or what specific substances are suspected.

Officers were seen serving a search warrant Thursday morning at A&B Tobacco and Vape, which has been confirmed as one of the suspected shops.

The substances suspected to be for sale have been linked to serious mental health problems and physical health complications, according to Myrtle Beach School Resource Officer Mark Bechdel. The substances have been popping up throughout the community, and even in schools, the department said.

As students head back into classrooms this fall, police say they are prioritizing their safety, and looking to put a stop to the distribution of the illegal substances.
