SC victim says alleged gunman shot him over Doritos and cheese dip
A Longs man is facing attempted murder charges after he allegedly shot another man outside a Little River area gas station.
The victim claims the shooter was jealous because he was buying late-night snacks, which included a bag of Doritos and a jar of Tostitos cheese dip.
Deshun Michael Carter, 44, is accused of attempting to kill the man after a dispute with the victim inside a gas station along Highway 9 on Thursday, according to an arrest warrant.
After the argument, Carter is accused of following the victim outside and shooting him multiple times about his body, the warrant said.
Horry County Police officers responded about 1:30 a.m. Aug. 21, 2025, to a hospital where the victim had one of the “projectiles” removed from his body, an incident report said.
The victim told officers that he went to the gas station to buy late-night snacks and, while attempting to check out, had a disagreement with the suspect, the report said. The victim asked the suspect, “what his problem is” and told him they could settle the situation like men outside, the report said.
The victim then left the store and got into his vehicle. Carter followed the victim outside and allegedly began shooting at him, the report said. In self-defense, the victim said he hit Carter with his vehicle, as well as the gas station building, the report said. Police noted in the report that there was damage to the victim’s vehicle.
The victim said he doesn’t know Carter outside of his job, but has seen him from time to time when he is buying his late-night snacks. It is not clear from the report if Carter actually works at the gas station.
The victim told police that he believes Carter was jealous of something, adding that it was because he was buying Doritos and a jar of Tostitos cheese dip.
Carter was booked into the J. Reuben Long Jail where he remained Friday morning.
