Car crashes into river after leading Horry police on chase along US 501. 2 rescued
A car crashed into the Little Pee Dee River late Monday night after leading Horry County Police on a chase along U.S. 501.
Two people who were in the car swam to shore and were detained by Horry County Police. The driver swam to shore and ran away, police said in a Facebook post.
Horry County Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a car near U.S. 501 around 9:45 p.m. Monday, the post said. The driver fled, leading police on a chase from U.S. 501 to Highway 378 before driving off Pitts Landing boat landing and into the river.
The Horry County Fire Rescue Dive Team helped towing crews remove the involved vehicle from the river.
The two people who swam to shore were uninjured. However, police are still searching for the driver.
It is unclear if any arrests have been made.
Horry County Police and South Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating the incident.
