Conway police have arrested another teenager for the murder of an 18-year-old student athlete.

Derrick Que’Shawn Ashley, a 19-year-old Conway resident, is being charged with murder in connection to the fatal shooting of Ja’Niya Richburg late Tuesday night.

Richburg, a star Loris High School basketball player, was shot through a window at her boyfriend’s house on Horry Street in Conway, according to authorities.

Ja’Niya Richburg was the first player in Loris High School history to break 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.

Details about the shooting are still unclear.

Ashley is in custody at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.

Richburg was a Loris resident and star player on the Loris High School girls’ basketball team. She won player of the year for the 2024-25 season and, according to a February High School on Sports Illustrated poll, Richburg was the first player in the school’s history to score 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.

In a Facebook post made earlier this month, Richburg wrote about looking forward to college with her 3.7 GPA and more 17 college acceptances.
