Mom in SC assaulted, causing her to drop child. Child receives skull fracture, brain bleed

A Longs man was arrested Wednesday by U.S. Marshals after causing a child to receive serious injuries, including a fractured skull and brain bleed, during a domestic violence incident.

Merrick Cantrell Bellamy, 32, was charged with abuse/to inflict great bodily injury upon a child, according to an arrest warrant. He was arrested by U.S. Marshals Carolinas Regional Fugitive Tasks Force after being wanted by Horry County Police.

Bellamy is accused of assaulting the victim’s mother, who was carrying the child away during a domestic violence incident, the warrant said. The assault caused the mother to fall and the child to hit the ground, the warrant said.

The assault happened at 3:30 a.m. on Jan. 30, 2025, according to an Horry County Police report.

The child, whose age was not provided in the report, suffered bruising, swelling and skull deformation to the right side of the face, the report said.

The mother took the child to the hospital. The mother also received multiple injuries from the assault, the police report said.

Bellamy remains in J. Reuben Long Detention Center on Thursday on a $50,000 bond.
