Man and woman shoot person trying to stop robbery at Myrtle Beach area hotel, police say

A person attempting to stop an armed robbery in the Myrtle Beach area was allegedly shot by the robber and his accomplice.

The victim was at the Sleep Inn on Waccamaw Pines Drive when he was shot with a 9mm round in the shoulder after trying to stop a robbery by David Lee Mills and Brittany Dawn Hunter, according to an arrest warrant.

The incident report included little information and it is unclear exactly how events happened.

The warrant said that Hunter allegedly followed the victim back to his vehicle and then used a silver handgun to force the driver to open his door. Hunter then told Mills to shoot the victim, the warrant said.

Mills, 40, and Hunter, 32, both of Myrtle Beach, were arrested by Horry County Police Feb. 28, 2025, on several charges, including attempted murder, armed robbery and possession of a deadly weapon during a violent crime.

The incident occurred on Jan. 30, 2025, about 11:22 a.m.

Mills is accused of holding a female by gunpoint and demanding money and her cellphone. Mills and Hunter were apparently removed from the hotel earlier and waited across the street for the victim, according to the warrant.

In a separate incident on Jan. 29, 2025, Mills allegedly pointed a black gun with a red laser at a store clerk at the 7-Eleven on Highway 707 in Murrells Inlet after a verbal argument, according to the warrant. Mills then left the store and the employee was able to secure the door to protect the other occupants.

Both Mills and Hunter remain in J. Ruben Long Detention Center Tuesday without bail.
