A 17-year-old has been charged with reckless homicide after trying to evade police and causing a deadly crash near Loris.

Christopher Dean Crosby, 17, was arrested Wednesday by South Carolina Highway Patrol for reckless homicide caused by injuries from vehicle and failure to stop for blue lights resulting in death.

The accident happened at 6:34 a.m. Sept. 23, 2024, on Daisy Road near Tansy Road, according to Lance Cpl. Lena Butler in an email.

Crosby was driving a 2008 Mercury Sedan and was being chased by police, according to Butler. During the chase, the vehicle went off the side of the road, rolled several times and then struck a tree.

Martin Channing McFeely, 38, of Loris, was a passenger in the vehicle and died on the scene from his injuries, according to Horry County Deputy Coroner Michelle McSpadden in an email.

According to an Horry County Police report, an officer saw the vehicle with its right rear door open and hazard lights on. The officer approached the vehicle to see if the driver needed any assistance.

As the officer walked up to the vehicle, the driver took off at a high rate of speed, the report said. After chasing the vehicle, it crashed.

Crosby was booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center where he remained Thursday without bail.
