Update: SC man killed in hit-and-run crash days before Thanksgiving named. Arrest is made

A 61-year-old man has been arrested for a hit and run crash that killed a pedestrian just days before Thanksgiving.

John Francis Seltzer was charged with hit and run, duties of a driver involved in accident with death, for a crash that occurred on Nov. 25, 2024, on U.S. 17 near Mica Avenue in Little River, according to Cpl. Lena Butler with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Barry Debsky, 68, was struck by the vehicle while along Mica Avenue, according to Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard in an email. Debsky was taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center where he died on Dec. 10, 2024, from his injuries, Willard said.

Seltzer was booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center on Dec. 23, 2024, where he remains Friday on a $250,000 bond.

The accident involving the pedestrian happened about 8:46 a.m., according to Horry County Fire Rescue in a Facebook post. The person was transported to the hospital with critical injuries, the post said.

Details of the accident were unavailable. The Sun News has requested the report from South Carolina Highway Patrol, which is investigating.
