SC pair cash stolen lottery tickets. Payout not enough to pay bond. They’re still in jail
A man remains in jail after stealing lottery tickets from a convenience store and cashing them in for $35 at another store.
Charles Dillon Haselden, 25, of Conway, stole seven scratch-off lottery tickets from behind the counter at the Scotchman Gas Station at 300 Hilton Road about 10:25 p.m. on Dec, 4, 2024, according to police reports.
He was able to steal the tickets when a woman he was with, Tessa Marie Polk, distracted the clerk by asking for help at a drink cooler, the report said. Haselden was seen on video taking the tickets and then stuffing them down his pants, the report said.
The pair then cashed the tickets at the Hotspot Gas Station, 1379 Red Bluff Road, in the Loris area for $35.
Haselden was arrested by Horry County Police on charges of attempting to defraud the South Carolina Lottery and shoplifting. Polk, 25, of Loris, was also charged with shoplifting.
The clerk realized the tickets were missing after doing inventory, the report said.
Both Haselden and Polk were booked Dec. 16 into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center where they remain Tuesday. Haselden was given a $6,000 bond and Polk a $1,000 bond.
