SC immigrant waits 4 years to report rape. She feared deportation by Trump if she told
A South Carolina immigrant woman waited four years to report a rape because she was afraid of being deported with Donald Trump as president.
The woman told Horry County Police about her alleged 2020 rape on Sept. 18, 2024. She said she met Jagandeep Singh, a man she knew from a previous job, at the Budget Inn, 681 U.S. 501, outside Conway, according to the incident report.
On Oct. 29, 2020, Singh showed the victim various rooms in the motel before bringing her inside one. He left the room and came back looking sweaty and nervous, the report said. He then closed the door, grabbed the victim from behind and told her he wanted to have sex with her.
After saying that, Singh raped the woman on the motel bed.
The woman said she waited to report the crime because Trump was in office at the time of the assault. She was afraid of being deported if she told police about what happened, according to the report.
Horry County Police arrested Singh on Nov. 22, 2024 for first-degree criminal sexual misconduct and kidnapping. He is currently on home detention.
Since Trump’s reelection, there’s been an increase in immigrants attempting to get citizenship or a green card before he takes office, The New York Times reported.
