Men try to break into Myrtle Beach hotel room, police said. Victims saw them in peephole

Two men were arrested after trying to break into an occupied Myrtle Beach hotel room.

Steve Allen Mason Jr., 32, and Tarance Darel Thomas, 52, were both charged with first-degree burglary after they attempted to enter a room at the Hampton Inn and Suites, 1801 S. Ocean Blvd., according to a Myrtle Beach Police report.

Police responded to the hotel at 7:50 p.m. Tuesday after it was reported that two men were trying to break into the occupied room, the report said. The room occupants observed the two men sitting in a lounge area outside their room when they left and then saw the same two men sitting in the same spot when they returned.

The victims went inside, and a short time after, they heard someone trying to force the door handle open to enter the room, the report said. The two men apparently left, but then came back later and knocked on the door. The victims looked through the door’s peephole and said that it was the two men who were outside their room earlier.

The victims locked themselves in the back of the room and contacted police, the report said.

Hotel staff told police that the two men tried to get a room, stating that their “boss” had rented a room and gave them a rewards number. The employees said that they did not have a room under that information and that they did not have a room rented at the hotel, the report said.

One of the men said he did not know the other, telling police that the man had invited him up to his room on the 14th floor to drink, the report said.

One of the men’s identification was found on the floor, where the victims’ room was located, police said.

Both men were booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center and remain there Thursday on a $100,000 bond each.
