SC parents arrested after leaving children in hot car during trip to Walmart, police say
The mother and father of two children were arrested over the weekend after leaving the children in a car alone with the windows rolled up, a Conway Police report shows.
Saturday had a high temperature of 79 degrees in Conway, according to the Weather Channel. A car in 75 degree weather can rise to over 100 degrees in 20 minutes, the American Veterinary Medical Association shows.
Andrea Chub Icaal, 34, of Conway, and Alfredo Choj Tiul, 38, of Myrtle Beach, were arrested on Oct. 12 for unlawfully placing a child at risk or abandoning a child, according to online bookings. They are currently being held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center with a bail of $10,000 each.
On Saturday around 11 a.m., the pair went into a Conway Walmart, 2709 Church St., and left two kids, including an infant, in the vehicle with the doors locked and the windows rolled up, according to the arrest warrant. The infant was bundled and in a car seat, the report said.
A bystander said the parents had been gone for around 20 minutes.
When police arrived, the children had been taken out of the vehicle and were both sweating profusely from the heat. The parents did return to the vehicle.
The children have been taken into custody of the Department of Social Services, according to the police report.
