SC man accused of leaving his elderly parents without food for days, soiled in own feces
A Conway man is accused of leaving his elderly parents, with whom he shares a home, without food for days and to remain in their waste, according to a Conway Police Department report.
Stephen Proctor, 55, was charged with two counts of neglect of a vulnerable adult on Aug. 17, 2024.
According to the report, police responded to the home on Aug. 16 after a nurse’s aide who cared for the 80-year-old man and 81-year-old woman once a week reported going to the home to find the victims “saturated” in urine and heavily soiled in feces.
The man was taking care of his wife until he fell about three weeks ago and was unable to care for himself, which includes changing his clothes, cooking food or simple tasks for himself or his wife, the report said. In addition, his wife needs help sitting up, moving and any other tasks for herself.
Proctor lives at the home, but spends several days during the week traveling for work. However, the aide told police that she went to the home the previous week and the son was there, but the man and woman were covered in feces and urine, as well as their bed, the report said.
The aide contacted another person to help with the victims and the home as it was “in complete disarray and both victims needed to be bathed,” the report said. Both victims said they were unsure when they ate last.
When an officer entered the home, the officer discovered a strong odor of urine and feces on the floor of the living room, bedroom and bathroom, the report said. The victims were laying in their bed in the master bedroom and the woman told the officer that she had not eaten in two days.
Proctor told police that he does live in the home with his parents.
Proctor was released from J. Reuben Long Detention Center on a $10,000 bond.
