Missing South Carolina teen found shot to death day before his 16th birthday

The body of a missing South Carolina teenager was found Thursday, the day before his 16th birthday, according to the Sumter Police Department.

Another teenager has been arrested in connection to the deadly shooting, while a search continues for another man wanted for murder, police said.

Derrick “C.D.” Wilson was reported missing by his family at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to police. He was last seen Tuesday leaving a relative’s home and getting into a car with “two unknown individuals,” according to a news release posted to the department’s Facebook page.

His body was found Thursday afternoon by officers in the area of Hoyt and Nelson streets, a residential neighborhood south of downtown Sumter.

Wilson was shot, according to police, who are investigating the death as a murder. An autopsy has been scheduled for next week.

On Friday, police said 17-year-old Manning resident Jaylen Hammett was taken into custody and charged with accessory before the fact of murder. Hammett was found at a home in Clarendon County and taken to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center where he’s being held without bond, according to police.

Sumter Police said they — along with the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office, Manning Police Department and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division — are searching in Clarendon County for Ja’Hugh L’Goeshay Brukale Martin. In addition to murder, the 20-year-old Manning resident could face other charges, according to police.

Police did not say if Martin and Hammett were the people in the car with Wilson when he was last seen. Information about a motive for the shooting was not available, but police said they are working to determine “what happened and why.”

Law enforcement officials are asking anyone with information to call the Sumter police at 803-436-2700, CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC, or submit an online tip.
