Horry County contractors stiff clients on pool installs, victims claim. They were arrested
A Murrells Inlet pool company and its owners have been arrested three times since 2023 for allegedly defrauding their clients seeking to have pools installed.
Jeffrey Haas, 43, and Emilie Haas, 39, both of McClellanville, are listed as the owners of Sun Pools of Murrells Inlet. They were both charged by Horry County Police with breach of trust with fraudulent intent on Sept. 7, 2023, Dec. 7, 2023 and Feb. 20, 2024.
In addition, the company and Jeffrey Haas face several civil lawsuits by people claiming they gave the company money for a pool installation, but the work was never completed.
A phone number for the company was disconnected and the website and Facebook page no longer exist. A message left for the couple’s attorney was not immediately returned.
According to an arrest warrant, Jeffrey and Emilie Haas accepted a check from one victim on May 1, 2023, for a deposit on a pool contract. The warrant did not include the amount of the check. However, the charge is for $10,000 or more. No work was ever started.
In another instance, a victim in the Myrtle Beach area met with the couple on Feb. 23, 2023, to sign a contract for work to install a pool, according to an arrest warrant. The couple had 120 days to complete the work, but as of Aug. 11, 2023, no work had been done.
A similar situation happened with a victim in the Longs area.
All the victims received a letter on July 12, 2023, from the couple’s law firm, Winslow Law Firm, that the contract was being terminated and that a full refund would be provided. However, the victims claim they have never received the refund, according to the warrant.
