High school student dead in morning shooting in Conway near bus stop. Here’s what we know
An 18-year-old high school student has died from an early morning shooting Thursday in Conway, according to the Horry County Coroner’s Office.
Ja’Mir Johnson died on the scene from injuries he received, a release said.
Horry County Schools released a statement that the shooting occurred near one of the bus stops and involved a Carolina Forest High School student
Conway Police responded to a report of shots fired near Rufus Street and Eighth Avenue about 7:30 a.m., according to a post on X, formerly Twitter.
The intersection is located in a quiet neighborhood, with many small brick houses.
The Sun News spoke to several neighbors, none of who wanted to give their names for safety reasons. They all said they heard the gunshots this morning and didn’t know what had happened until later. They also did not know Johnson.
One woman said her grandchild usually takes the bus to school, but she kept the child home from school Thursday. She does not know if she will continue to send her grandchild on the bus, she said.
The Horry County Schools release said no other injuries have been reported.
“Many students (Carolina Forest High & Black Water Middle) witnessed this incident near the bus stop. The police are currently meeting with the students who may have witnessed this tragic incident. Additional counseling services will be available to assist our students who may have been traumatized by this senseless act of violence,” the school statement said.
This is a developing story.
