Horry County police warn residents against phone scam, suspect claiming to be with sheriff’s department

An individual is calling residents, claiming to be police, and threatening to arrest them for missed jury duty unless they immediately pay a fine, according to Horry County authorities.

Horry County police said they’ve received information about someone calling people claiming to be Sergeant Daniel Martin with the Horry County Sheriff's Department.

The suspect calls victims on the phone and states he has a warrant for their arrest for missing jury duty and tells the victim unless they immediately pay a fine by obtaining a prepaid money card, they will go to jail, authorities said.

Horry County police said this person is not employed by the sheriff’s department and the department does not conduct business that way.

Police said anyone victimized should report the incident to authorities. Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call Horry County police at 248-1520 or the tip line at 915-8477.
