Woman arrested after minor given beer and assaulted

A 22-year-old woman was arrested after a 16-year-old girl was given beer and assaulted, according to an Horry County police report.

Kelly Suzanne Hewett, 22, of Loris, was charged on Monday with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and cruelty to children following the incident, and was released from the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on $5,500 bail, according to jail records.

Horry County police were called about 2:30 a.m. June 27 to the intersection of Highway 19 and Wasp Branch Road where the 16-year-old girl reported the incident, along with her parents.

The victim told police she was at Hewett’s boyfriend’s home on the 9200 block of Wasp Branch Road, and everyone there was drinking.

Hewett, who is a family member of the victim’s, went to the store to get more alcohol, and when she returned she discovered the victim had left with a male friend, police said.

Hewett called the victim, and she immediately came back to the home where Hewett then began to scream at her in the yard, authorities said.

The victim said she was in a bedroom getting her things when Hewett’s boyfriend came to check on her. Hewett then came in and accused the victim of trying to steal her boyfriend and pushed her, authorities said.

The victim said Hewett also grabbed her by the hair and punched her in the face. Hewett’s boyfriend broke up the fight, according to the report.

The victim said she ran from the house and called her parents to come get her. The victim was taken back to the house to get her things when Hewett began yelling at her and assaulting her again, police said.

An officer smelled alcohol on the victim, who said she was given three to four beers, but did not feel intoxicated.

Police later obtained warrants and Hewett was arrested in connection with the incident.
