Members of Horry County gang with ties to a Mexican drug cartel have been sentenced
Horry County drug traffickers affiliated with a Mexican drug cartel have been sentenced in federal court after a multi-year wiretap investigation, the U.S. Attorney’s Office District of South Carolina said in a press release.
Monday’s announcement said all 30 gang members pleaded guilty to federal violations ranging from drug conspiracy to using a telephone to traffic drugs less than 20 months after they were indicted.
Evidence from the narcotics and violence investigation said the Cedar Branch drug trafficking organization- located in the Cedar Branch area of the county - distributed heroin, fentanyl, cocaine, crack cocaine, methamphetamine and firearms, according to the press release.
The traffickers were given drugs from interstate sources, including the Jalisco New Generation Cartel based in Jalisco, Mexico, the release said.
The interstate conspiracy also had ties in North Carolina, it said.
Multiple agencies were a part of the investigation, including the Horry County Police Department, the Myrtle Beach Police Department and the FBI.
“This operation dismantled a violent criminal enterprise, put its members behind bars, and made communities in South Carolina safer,” said U.S. Attorney Corey F. Ellis. “This case illustrates the results that are possible when federal, state, and local agencies work together toward a common goal.”
