Former Pawleys Island Police Chief Guy Osborne died Saturday night while in Virginia for an off-road bicycle ride, according to current Pawleys Island Police Chief Michael Fanning. He was 69.

Osborne previously worked for the Horry County Police Department and operated Chief Big Daddy’s Boot Camp, WPDE reported Sunday.

Fanning said Osborne went to Virginia with a group of his boot camp members to trail ride, which is off-road biking, and it appears he had a heart attack.

Osborne was riding the Creeper bike trail in Washington, Va., when he died.

“He was just a motivating person and touched a lot of people throughout the community,” said Fanning.

An Army veteran, Osborne established Chief Big Daddy's Boot Camp in 1997, to provide pre-dawn fitness sessions six days a week. In 2010, he told The Sun News, “I’ve been doing it forever. I want to share that with other people. That motivates me to help other people.”

He said the community was becoming more active outdoors. “I’m happy about that. I'd like to see Myrtle Beach become the fittest place in the nation.”

Arrangements were announced Monday for Osborne, who was born in Union, the son of the late Guy and Rebecca Osborne.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christ United Church, 2901 Fantasy Way in Myrtle Beach. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel.

Osborne was preceded in death by his daughter, Rhonda “Sissy” O’Shields, and his granddaughter, Stacey “Popie” O’Shields.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Betty Osborne of Myrtle Beach; a son, Scott Osborne (Torie Waddell) of Conway; daughter Rebecca Osborne of Myrtle Beach; grandsons, Dylan Osborne and Justin O’Shields; granddaughter, Brookelyn Postlewait; sisters, Hassie Mae Vaughn of Union, Brenda Dubnik of MD; brothers, James “Jimmy” Osborne of Union and Tommy “Oz” Osborne of Maryland.
